40 mins by bus or car from downtown Wellington
Fitzroy Bay is the start of the Great Harbour Way, accessed through Burdan's Gate in Eastbourne.
You can get from downtown Wellington to Burdan's Gate in Eastbourne by:
- bus - the Eastbourne bus departs from Courtenay Place, and stops frequently throughout its journey to Burdan's Gate. Call Metlink for timetable and fares
- Dominion Post Ferry - the ferry leaves from Queen's Wharf on the Wellington waterfront, and goes to Days Bay (where you can pick up a bus or taxi connection to Burdan's Gate). Contact the ferry office for timetable and fares.
- car - a 40-minute drive from downtown Wellington via State Highway 2, Petone Esplanade, and Eastern Bays Marine Drive. Burdan's Gate is at the very end of Muritai Road.
- taxi - take a taxi to Burdan's Gate from downtown Wellington, or from the Days Bay ferry wharf.
The start point of the Great Harbour Way is 12 kilometres from Burdan's Gate. There are several ways of getting to the start:
- walk or cycle in from Burdan's Gate, and walk/cycle out again. Avoid a complete double-back by taking the various alternative routes along the way. Bicycles can be hired from Burdan's Gate Bike Hire
- be dropped off at Fitzroy Bay: occasional access through the locked gate for vehicles supporting organised groups of walkers or cyclists can be gained from the Hutt City Council.
- skip leg 2, and start from either Burdan's Gate or elsewhere along the Eastbourne waterfront
In 2010 Bearing Head came into public ownership, and will be administered by the Greater Wellington Regional Council. This will make access to the Great Harbour Way from the Wainuiomata Valley possible.
